Course

This course is designed to explore how children acquire language and to look at the ways in which children learn both first and second languages. The course also examines the role of planning and assessment in the primary school to support effective teaching and language learning.

This Maths course is designed to explore the teaching of mathematics in primary schools, and in particular the four strands Data, Shape and space, Measures and Algebra. The emphasis is on reviewing the mathematics curriculum, where each of these strands will be brought to life in a practical way.

This course provides a detailed examination of the structure and layout of the English Curriculum and provides approaches and methodologies for achieving the objectives of each strand of the English Curriculum. The course examines the area of assessment and outlines various assessment methods for the strands of the English Curriculum. There is a supplementary lesson on planning for English.

This practical course highlights the importance of allowing pupils to work with concrete materials while practising the language of Mathematics from Junior Infants to Sixth Class, looking at each of the strands in the Mathematics Curriculum. The course also looks at assessment of numeracy skills and how this important area of the curriculum is linked to planning and teaching in the classroom.

This course covers the curricular areas of oral language, reading and writing and the teaching of these core subjects in the Infant classes. It looks at the importance of planning, assessment and creating a positive teaching and learning environment.

In this course, we explore the effective implementation of the various curricular subjects at Infant level and examine best classroom management practices for Infants, using the guiding principles of the Primary Curriculum and the content of all the curricular areas.

This course identifies the importance of the key areas of listening, early reading and spelling, and provides teachers with practical strategies for teaching these important areas of the curriculum. The course also explores the assessment and correction of spelling and a whole-school approach to the teaching of spelling.

This course outlines evidence-based strategies to promote social communication skills for pupils with autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs). The course also discusses the management of challenging behaviour, classroom management, collaboration and developing individual education plans (IEPs) for pupils with ASDs.

This course, formerly known as Health, Stress and Coping, addresses the management skills that are vital for personal health and well-being in schools. With this in mind,the course allows teachers to implement subject areas of the curriculum in a way that is beneficial to their own personal health and that of their pupils.

This course examines definitions of educational psychology and explores some of the relevant teaching and learning theories that have emerged from psychology. The course identifies the various different stages of communication development in Early Childhood Education, the difficulties some children may experience and how to help them with these difficulties.

Hibernia College is a HETAC accredited online college offering quality assured blended and online education programmes.
 

  • All courses will be released on Monday 03 February 2014 and must be completed by Friday 16 May 2014 at 5.00pm. When you study the lessons between these dates is up to you. It is highly recommended however, that you complete the course within two weeks of starting to study the content.
  • Each course has 5 lessons and requires 20 hours study - 4 hours study time is required per lesson.
  • The Discussion Forums are moderated by expert facilitators.
  • At the end of the course you will have a Continuing Professional Development record to print and keep (including all your approved work plus a certificate).
  • You are advised to keep a record of your online and offline study times, as you will be asked for these when submitting for course approval.
