Course Introduction
|

 |
This course is designed to explore how children acquire language and to look at the ways in which children learn both first and second languages. The course also examines the role of planning and assessment in the primary school to support effective teaching and language learning. |

This Maths course is designed to explore the teaching of mathematics in primary schools, and in particular the four strands Data, Shape and space, Measures and Algebra. The emphasis is on reviewing the mathematics curriculum, where each of these strands will be brought to life in a practical way. |

This course provides a detailed examination of the structure and layout of the English Curriculum and provides approaches and methodologies for achieving the objectives of each strand of the English Curriculum. The course examines the area of assessment and outlines various assessment methods for the strands of the English Curriculum. There is a supplementary lesson on planning for English. |

This course explores Maths programmes and simulations that will promote collaborative learning and problem-solving, and develop critical thinking skills in a multi-media, web-enhanced environment. It also discusses how children develop maths concepts and an understanding of the operations in Maths. |

This practical course highlights the importance of allowing pupils to work with concrete materials while practising the language of Mathematics from Junior Infants to Sixth Class, looking at each of the strands in the Mathematics Curriculum. The course also looks at assessment of numeracy skills and how this important area of the curriculum is linked to planning and teaching in the classroom. |

This course covers the curricular areas of oral language, reading and writing and the teaching of these core subjects in the Infant classes. It looks at the importance of planning, assessment and creating a positive teaching and learning environment. |

In this course, we explore the effective implementation of the various curricular subjects at Infant level and examine best classroom management practices for Infants, using the guiding principles of the Primary Curriculum and the content of all the curricular areas. |

This course identifies the importance of the key areas of listening, early reading and spelling, and provides teachers with practical strategies for teaching these important areas of the curriculum. The course also explores the assessment and correction of spelling and a whole-school approach to the teaching of spelling. |

In 2011, Hibernia College offered a total of twenty five courses as part of its highly successful summer programme, approved by the Department of Education and Skills (DES) for EPV days. This course gives teachers an in-depth knowledge of the elements of drama and the approaches and methodologies used in teaching drama in the classroom. The course goes on to explore the principles of inclusion, planning and integration of drama across the curriculum. |

This course outlines evidence-based strategies to promote social communication skills for pupils with autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs). The course also discusses the management of challenging behaviour, classroom management, collaboration and developing individual education plans (IEPs) for pupils with ASDs. |

This course allows teachers to explore differentiation and variation in content, activities, methodology and resources while taking into account the range of abilities, interests, needs and experiences of pupils in their class. It helps teachers to provide for pupils of varied abilities who have challenges in coordination, self-management, attention and motor-skill difficulties. |

This course examines attitudes to special educational needs and challenges to communication and collaboration in our schools. It outlines opportunities for collaboration and communication with parents and families, thus creating a welcoming school. |

Hibernia College is a HETAC accredited online college offering quality assured blended and online education programmes.
Our courses are run in accordance with DES criteria:
- All courses will be released on Monday, 06 February and must be completed by Friday, 25 May at 5pm. When you study the lessons between these dates is up to you.
- Each course has 5 lessons and requires 20 hours study.
- The Discussion Forums are moderated and facilitated.
- At the end of the course you will have a Continuing Professional Development record to print and keep (including all your approved work plus a certificate).
- Completion of Spring CPD Courses does not allow for EPV days (as per DES criteria).

- Courses may be purchased online or by sending an application form and payment to CPD Administrator, Hibernia College, 2 Clare St., Dublin 2. (please allow 5 working days from receipt of application). See 'Enrol on a Course' page for details.
- Online purchasing will continue until Monday, 21 May. Postal applications must be received by Monday, 14 May.
- All courses cost: €89.
